Healthy Eating: What to Eat When You’re Feeling ______

Kill your headache by hydrating it with water- and nutrient-rich foods like watermelon, says Stella Metsovas B.S., C.N. a nutritionist in Laguna Beach, California. “The high water content in watermelon and other fruits and veggies can soothe a headache, as can their rich source of essential minerals such as magnesium, also key to stopping a throbbing headache,” she says. Other foods with high water content? Cucumber, melons, tomatoes, berries and lettuce.

What to eat when you can’t sleep

Miso soup! The comforting Japanese broth contains tryptophan, a serotonin- and melatonin-producing amino acid that can help you get sleepy fast. Other foods high in tryptophan include non-fat Greek-style yogurts, lentil soup, raw sunflower seeds and turkey.

Foods to avoid before bedtime? Wine and sugary foods, including fruit. “It’s imperative to stay away from fruits and simple sugars in the evening hours because of the surge of insulin that can occur during sleep,” says Metsovas.

LOST 12 LBS.!
BY EATING LESS WHITE FLOUR

Jim Nesbitt cross-trained five days a week and was fairly trim at 174 lbs. Except, he says, “my belly stuck out.” Frustrated, the Tustin, Calif., computer network broker, 46, hired nutritionist Stella Metsovas, who noticed he ate a lot of floury foods. “I love my pizza, pasta and bread,” says the dad of 7-year-old twins.

He now embraces high-protein snacks like nuts and drinks less wine but still eats his favorites in moderation. “I’ll have pizza with my kids maybe twice a month.” The result? “For the first time in 30 years, I have a flat stomach.”
BEFORE 156 LBS.
